The official Erfurt Christmas Market Portal
Welcome to the Christmas Market in Erfurt!
Martin Luther, the great Reformer, once declared that Erfurt is "in the ideal location … the perfect place for a city". Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia, dates back more than 1,280 years and its long history is reflected in the beautifully preserved old quarter. The stately patrician town houses and lovingly restored half-timbered buildings in the charming city centre bear witness to Erfurt's medieval prosperity.
The monumental ensemble of St. Mary's Cathedral and the Church of St. Severus is Erfurt's most famous landmark, and therefore makes the perfect backdrop to the city's Christmas market. Every year the wide range of festive attractions at the market attracts some two million visitors of all ages. Christmas wares of every description are available from more than 200 wooden huts on and around Domplatz, Fischmarkt and Willy-Brandt-Platz squares and along Anger and Schlösserbrücke. And the city's Christmas market just wouldn't be the same without regional favourites such as Thuringian Bratwurst and Erfurt Schittchen, a stollen so good it's been registered as a trademark. Also available to buy are handcrafted products from Thuringia including Christmas decorations, traditional blue-dyed fabrics and a wide range of pottery, as well as crafts from the Erzgebirge mountains.
Erfurt Christmas market is one of Germany's finest, and a great way to explore it is with one of our tours or packages. Erfurt's central location within Germany makes it is easy to reach by car, coach or train.
