Erfurt's advent crown has been displayed at the Christmas market since 2004. Its location on the cathedral steps creates a link between the market and the monumental ensemble of St. Mary's Cathedral and the Church of St. Severus and it acts as a reminder that Christmas is coming.
At 11:15 am on each of the last four Sundays before Christmas, children from various kindergartens light the Advent candles that they have made and put on a small Christmas performance. A different Christian symbol is used on each of the Sundays.
