Advent crown of Erfurt

It is the ultimate symbol of the Advent season - and its four enormous candles shine right on the stairs below the cathedral of Erfurt.

Erfurt's advent crown has been displayed at the Christmas market since 2004. Its location on the cathedral steps creates a link between the market and the monumental ensemble of St. Mary's Cathedral and the Church of St. Severus and it acts as a reminder that Christmas is coming.

At 11:15 am on each of the last four Sundays before Christmas, children from various kindergartens light the Advent candles that they have made and put on a small Christmas performance. A different Christian symbol is used on each of the Sundays.
